AL KOUT MULTIPURPOSE HALL

On top of the Al Kout Mall in Kuwait City lies the Al Kout Multipurpose Hall. This project was designed as an additional phase to the mall that was already under construction, also designed by CallisonRTKL.  The design team used this as an opportunity to create a literal and metaphorical “crown” to the mall that would be iconic and recognizable from a distance. The main feature of the design is the uplit shroud composed of woven metal panels and senuous, curvilinear edges, masking the rather simple rectilinear form that the program required.  Using parametric design tools, we were able to coordinate with the structural engineers throughout the design process to ensure the shroud assembly met the lightweight, fluid aesthetic of the design intent, while able to withstand the environmental constraints of the coastal desert ecoregion of the middle east.
